Families often consider indoor cameras when an older parent begins living alone. The concern is understandable: Did Mom get up this morning? Has Dad been in the bathroom unusually long? Did anyone arrive at the house?
But a camera can solve one worry by creating another. It records far more than the family usually needs to know, especially in bedrooms, bathrooms, and the ordinary living spaces where a person should feel at home—not watched.
A privacy-first alternative is to use presence sensors and a few carefully chosen home sensors. They can answer limited questions about activity without producing photographs, video, or audio.
What a presence sensor can tell you
A presence sensor reports that movement or human presence was detected in an area. It does not need to show what someone is wearing, what is on a table, who is visiting, or what was said in the room.
Two common sensor types behave differently:
- A passive infrared, or PIR, motion sensor notices changes in heat as someone moves across its field of view. It is simple and useful in hallways, but a person sitting quietly may appear to be absent.
- A millimeter-wave, or mmWave, presence sensor can detect much smaller movements. It may continue to report occupancy while someone is reading, watching television, or sleeping.
Neither type is a medical device, and neither can determine why a person has stopped moving. A sensor can notice a pattern that deserves a check-in. It cannot diagnose a fall, illness, or emergency.
Why we highlight the Aqara Presence Sensor FP2
The Aqara Presence Sensor FP2 is one of the systems we can design and build around for a privacy-conscious home. It uses 60–64 GHz millimeter-wave radar rather than a lens or microphone. It is wired for continuous power and connects over 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, so placement must account for both a safe power path and dependable network coverage.
In its wall-mounted zone-positioning mode, one FP2 can map a room into defined areas such as a bed, doorway, chair, or bathroom entrance. Aqara currently specifies coverage of up to approximately 430 square feet, up to 30 zones, and multi-person detection. Real-world performance depends on room shape, reflective surfaces, furnishings, pets, sensor angle, and calibration; those published maximums should not be treated as a promise for every Boston condo or house.
The FP2 can expose its zones to Aqara Home and supported platforms including Apple Home, Home Assistant, Amazon Alexa, and Google Home. That gives us room to design the resident-facing controls and family alerts around the ecosystem the household already understands.
Local automation is available in supported Aqara or Apple Home configurations. That can keep actions such as turning on a hallway light working when the Internet is unavailable, although remote notifications and other cloud-dependent functions still need connectivity.
The FP2 fall-detection tradeoff
Aqara also offers a fall-detection mode when the FP2 is mounted on the ceiling. This feature deserves careful wording. Aqara states that the FP2 is not a medical device and its fall feature is for notification purposes. Ceiling fall-detection mode also makes most zone-positioning and normal presence features unavailable.
That means one FP2 should not be sold as if it can simultaneously provide full room zoning and comprehensive medical fall protection. A household may need separate sensors for separate jobs, plus a wearable or medical alert path for contacting help. We design around those boundaries instead of hiding them.
Start with a question, not a device
The best setup begins with a specific, agreed-upon question. For example:
- Has there been normal movement between the bedroom, bathroom, and kitchen this morning?
- Is the bathroom still occupied after an unusually long time?
- Did an exterior door open overnight?
- Has anyone entered a room that normally stays empty?
Each question should have a clear reason and a proportionate response. “No kitchen activity by 10 a.m.” might prompt a family member to call. It should not automatically contact emergency services.
Avoid collecting data merely because a sensor can produce it. A minute-by-minute history of someone’s home life may be technically possible while still being intrusive and unnecessary.
Design around private zones
Bathrooms and bedrooms are often where safety concerns and privacy concerns overlap most sharply. They are also where a camera is least appropriate.
A presence sensor can indicate that a room is occupied without exposing the person inside it. A door contact can show that a door opened. A smart light can illuminate a nighttime path. These small signals can be combined without creating a visual record.
Placement matters. A hallway sensor may answer the real question without putting any technology in the bedroom. A bathroom presence sensor should be adjusted so it does not report activity through an adjacent wall or doorway. Pet movement, guests, cleaners, and changes in routine should be considered before anyone treats an alert as meaningful.
Use an escalation ladder
Alerts work better when they follow a calm, documented sequence:
- Look for a second signal, such as hallway activity, a door opening, or the wearable device reconnecting.
- Send a normal check-in message or place a phone call.
- Contact the nearby person the parent has approved as a backup.
- Escalate to emergency services only when the available facts and the family’s emergency plan justify it.
This approach helps prevent a single dead battery, disconnected sensor, Internet outage, or changed routine from becoming a crisis.
Keep the resident in control
The person living in the home should know what every sensor does, where it is installed, who receives alerts, and how long activity records are kept. Consent is not a one-time signature. Revisit the arrangement when health needs, caregivers, or household routines change.
A good privacy review asks:
- Does the sensor capture images or audio?
- Does the system work locally, or send activity to a vendor’s cloud?
- Who owns the account and recovery information?
- Which relatives or caregivers can see the data?
- How long is history retained?
- What happens when the Internet, power, or hub goes down?
- Can the resident pause monitoring or see its current status?
Even non-camera data deserves protection. A detailed occupancy history can reveal sleep, travel, and daily routines. Use individual accounts, multi-factor authentication, limited sharing, and the shortest useful retention period.

We can also combine FP2 sensors with door contacts, leak sensors, smart lighting, and an Apple Watch or other agreed alert device. The design remains modular: a failed sensor should be visible as a device problem, not silently interpreted as an absent or unresponsive person.
Test ordinary days before relying on alerts
Install the system in observation mode first. Watch how it behaves during a normal week without sending urgent alerts. Include quiet afternoons, overnight bathroom trips, visitors, pets, and time away from home.
Then test the response. Who receives the notification? Is the wording understandable? What happens if the first person does not answer? Can the family tell the difference between “no activity,” “sensor offline,” and “hub has no Internet”?
No smart-home sensor should become the household’s only safety plan. Presence sensing works best as one layer alongside regular human contact, a wearable or phone for calling for help, working smoke and carbon-monoxide alarms, good lighting, and a written emergency contact plan.
A respectful result
The goal is not to turn a parent’s home into a control room. It is to notice a small number of meaningful changes while leaving ordinary life private.
